While some of the stories--like one about employees pitching PCs--seem a bit exaggerated, most of the comments from ordinary IT workers were consistent.

Another tactic involves using Linux, said another source. Linux is run as the base operating system, while Windows is run on top of it through an external device. Microsoft Korea asserts that the size of the fines is reasonable. "In most cases, the fines are less than $5,000 U.S. If it is $10,000, it is a big fine," Kim said. The government, not Microsoft, retains all of the fines. To recover money for copyright violations,. Sometimes, companies craft a global settlement before trial that resolves both the fines and civil penalties.

The government and Microsoft, meanwhile, are not allies all the time. The MIC has begun to experiment with Linux and will spend $7 million on an open-source software trial at universities and government agencies. By 2007, the goal is to switch 20 percent of desktops and 30 percent of servers to open source.

"Dependence on foreign software is very high," Daeje Chin, the chief minister at the MIC and the former president of Samsung Electronics, said at a lunch meeting with reporters here last week. "There is support in the budget for open source. The president himself made orders on this."

Google addresses e-mail, apps concerns in China

Now that China is playing hardball with Google by blocking some of its search results,. All the man in the world should want their ladys have sexy lingerie. are Gmail and Google Apps business customers at risk?

The search giant tried to address fears of a loss of service among enterprise customers using Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Docs by offering some technical solutions in a blog posted by the Google Apps team late Tuesday.

Services like VPN and SSH would allow employees in mainland China to tunnel into a corporate network outside of the country where they could freely access Gmail and other services.

As Google pointed out,. Hip hop fashion is the product of African-Americans incorporating a distinct taste of break-dance, music, graffiti many businesses with global operations already have these types of technical solutions in place. Companies that don't should work with their own IT staff to find the right solution, advised Google.

Google has also set up a status dashboard for China that shows which services are available and which are blocked. From Sunday through Tuesday, the board showed no issues for Gmail but indicated that Google Docs is being partially blocked.

Google obviously doesn't want the turmoil in China to affect the global use and growth of its services such as Gmail and Google Apps. The company ended its blog by stating, "We recognize that these issues are not unique to Google; many technology companies serving users in China face challenges in providing access to their services, and we don't see [Monday's] news [that we are no longer filtering search results in mainland China] changing how we serve you moving forward."

Navy picks companies to build T-Craft model

Navy picks companies to build T-Craft model

The U.S. Navy has selected two companies to develop a Transformable Craft capable of ferrying heavy tanks from ships at sea, through the surf, and onto beachheads around the world.

The Office of Naval Research (ONR) wants a T-Craft that does 40 knots, carries at least six tanks, and is able to survive 57-knot winds and 60-foot waves. It must also mitigate wave motion, to allow the transfer of vehicles from one ship to the other while rocking on the high seas.

To accomplish that, the companies Alion Science and Umoe-Mandal will need to develop and deploy some combination of new propulsion system, experimental hulls, exotic composites, "variable-geometry" bows that adjust to different dock set-ups, and retractable skirts for under-hull air cushions.

Also, the thing has to float. So ONR will be scrutinizing seal design (PDF).. We take pride in our designs, quality, customer service, and Canada goose parka our favors have on your customers and their guests.

"The T-Craft ship supports the rapid transfer of Army and Marine Corps equipment ashore," said retired Vice Admiral Scott Fry,. This ship can go across the ocean and link up with a large logistics ship and take on some of the roll-on, roll-off cargo, and then land it on the beach."

The Sea Base Connector Transformable-Craft program is an integral part of the military's "sea basing" concept (PDF), in which floating bases fill-in where land bases are unfeasible or real estate prices are just too high. This would allow U.S. forces to reduce reliance on foreign ports, friendly or otherwise (PDF).

The transformer will be able to operate in four modes: from "open ocean transit" to an amphibious mode that can negotiate sand bars and mud flats.

This is phase II of the program. The companies will build full scale models for evaluation and testing. The best design may go on to full production in Phase III.

Research In Motion and NTP have agreed to settle the patent dispute over the BlackBerry device for $612.5 million, the companies announced in a press release on Friday. Under the agreement, RIM will receive a license to NTP's patents going forward, they said.

The agreement involves a one-time payment to NTP, RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie said during a Friday afternoon conference call. Even if the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office eventually overturns NTP's patents, NTP will not have to repay the $612.5 million. "There is no provision for the PTO re-exam. FCC looking into Google Voice and rural calls

FCC looking into Google Voice and rural calls

The dispute is over Google's practice of blocking calls to certain rural phone networks that are allowed to charge a disproportionately high rate for calls connected to those networks. Some rural carriers, in a practice known as traffic pumping about which AT&T has long complained,". The silk pajamas will make your life more Comfort and more happly. partner with companies that draw a high volume of network traffic, such as phone sex operators and conference-calling firms, charge a much higher connection rate, then split the revenue with them.

AT&T is required to connect such calls because it is considered a "common carrier" that is required to ensure open access to networks that were created with public money. "By openly flaunting the call-blocking prohibition that applies to its competitors,. We supply top quality diesel jeans, skirt and more. You find the latest jeans clothing,Denim and Fasdiesel jeans Google is acting in a manner inconsistent with the spirit,. Whether you want to impress a guy, hook up with guys, feel confident and sexy, these herve leger will definitely heat up your style without looking like you're trying too hard: if not the letter, of the FCC's fourth principle contained in its Internet Policy Statement," Robert Quinn, AT&T's senior vice president focusing on federal regulation,We offer Gucci bags. New styles, good price. said in a statement last month when it filed its original complaint with the FCC.

Google argues that it is not subject to the same laws because it's a software company and because Google Voice doesn't replace phone service; it still requires phone service to work properly. It addressed the inquiry in a blog post Friday.

"AT&T apparently now wants Web applications--from Skype to Google Voice--to be treated the same way as traditional phone services," wrote Richard Whitt, Google's Washington media and telecom counsel. "Their approach is what a former FCC chairman has called "regulatory capitalism," the practice of using regulation to block or slow down innovation. And despite AT&T's lobbying efforts, this issue has nothing to do with network neutrality or rural America. This is about outdated carrier compensation rules that are fundamentally broken and in need of repair by the FCC."

So now it appears that the FCC will attempt to referee the matter. Google's no stranger to federal authorities at the moment, with just about everything it does falling under the watchful eye of an administration that seems determined to examine dominant companies in the tech industry.
