Hoekstra blames primary loss on Right to Life of Michigan
U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra today slammed Right to Life of Michigan and its president for not endorsing him in the Republican gubernatorial primary earlier this month, saying the group hurt its own cause as well as his campaign.
The group's decision to back only Attorney General Mike Cox allowed Ann Arbor businessman Rick Snyder -- who is against abortion but in favor of embryonic stem cell research -- to beat him in the election, Hoekstra said.
With 620,000 supporters including 150,000 member-donors, Right to Life of Michigan is a prized endorsement for Republican candidates. The group touts its endorsement in mailings and allows candidates access to its mailing list. The group also passed over Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard and Kalamazoo Sen.. Hoekstra is not the first to claim Right to Life of Michigan's endorsement of Cox hurt its standing with Michigan's anti-abortion movement.
Doug Koopman, a political science professor at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, said Hoekstra was considered spotless by many in the movement, whereas Cox was viewed with suspicion over his admitted involvement in an extra-marital relationship and his investigation of the rumored Manoogian Mansion stripper party in Detroit.
