2 Detroit firefighters remain in critical condition after building collapse
Two firefighters injured in a suspicious blaze early Friday morning on the city's east side remain in critical condition while another is in serious condition and a fourth is now in fair condition.
Eric Jurmo and Brian Baulch, both 31, are in critical condition with Jurmo at Detroit Receiving Hospital and Baulch at St. John Hospital. Brendan Milewski,. In all, seven firefighters were injured in the two-alarm fire early Friday morning in a commercial building at Jefferson and Lenox near Dickerson. The blaze caused the roof to collapse and a portion of the building to fall onto a sidewalk, Detroit fire officials said.
Two other firefighters injured, but not by the collapsed wall -- Jeron Whitehorn, 30, and Robert Puckett -- were treated and released Friday.
The blaze happened around 5 a.m. Friday morning.
A panicked firefighter could be heard on a police scanner asking dispatchers to send everyone available to the scene.
Dennis Dermidoff, a former Detroit fire chief and 40-year department veteran, said Rutkowski was fighting the fire along with his brother, firefighter Thomas Rutkoswki, when the collapse occurred, and Thomas Rutkowski drove his brother to the hospital to be treated for a broken pelvis.
"All the men who were injured in this fire were veterans with at least 10 to 15 years of experience," said Dermidoff,". The collapses happen a lot, but it doesn't always result in these kinds of injuries.
